Alumni Affairs and Development (AA&D) comprises the University Development Office (UDO), Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Development, AA&D Resources, and the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA). There is a unique relationship between the University and the FAS fundraising operations, resulting from a long history in which University fundraising ultimately grew out of College fundraising. Harvard Alumni Association (HAA) The HAA is the official association for all of Harvard University’s alumni. The HAA is responsible for University-wide alumni initiatives and works with all Harvard Schools, including the FAS, to increase alumni engagement. The HAA is also the home of the Harvard and Radcliffe College Alumni Programs Office. The HAA supports a global network of volunteers who organize alumni through Harvard Clubs, Shared Interest Groups, college classes, and graduate and professional School organizations. This full-time position in the HAA reports to the Director of Engagement Marketing and is responsible for developing content strategy across HAA communications and for all HAA social media channels. This role is expected to bring creative and innovative approaches to storytelling and content-sharing through a number of different mediums, overseeing writing projects of long and short form content that tie to HAA content priorities. This position serves as a resource with deep content knowledge of priorities across the University, leading HAA storytelling initiatives through project management and collaboration. The Assistant Director develops and leads social media strategy across four accounts collectively targeting 120,000+ followers, disseminating compelling messaging—both written and visual—to the global alumni community, driving digital audience engagement with HAA channels and events and programs, and aligning social strategy with overarching HAA content strategy This position collaborates with Harvard Public Affairs and Communications (HPAC), the AA&D Content Strategy Team, Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Development Communications, and University partners to develop and implement content strategy in support of University-wide priorities and initiatives through storytelling, content-sharing, as well as social media. This position requires a strong command of digital marketing principles, demonstrated ability to use social media to build and manage large and robust social media communities, and ability to develop comprehensive content strategy to drive digital audience engagement with the HAA. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Develops and manages social media channel and content strategy with the goals of growing social media following and alumni engagement across multiple platforms and supporting AA&D and University-wide initiatives and campaigns. Creates and manages voice, tone, and message direction for all accounts. Demonstrates confidence and judgment in representing HAA on digital channels to an audience of more than 100,000 on a daily basis. Identifies new ways to talk and engage with alumni followers online. Develops overarching HAA storytelling content in support of HAA and HPAC priority initiatives. Works closely with HPAC, the Harvard Gazette staff, and the AA&D Content Strategy team to bring alumni voices into Harvard Gazette storytelling. Develops new storytelling methods to promote and amplify HAA event attendance and reach. (cont. below) Leads social media advertising strategy and implementation for more than 30 different HAA events and programs throughout the calendar year with the goal of driving audience engagement prior to, during, and after events and programs. For annual events, grows audience participation year-over-year. Manages marketing schedules and day-to-day implementation of audience engagement strategies through a variety of social media channels including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram including curating University content, posting/responding on social channels, and testing on all platforms. Partners with the Director and oversees some work of the Coordinator, Engagement Marketing to ensure appropriate social media engagement plans are in place and monitors ongoing activity. Ensures that each channel works in coordination with one another and with email marketing for increased effectiveness. Manages relationships with HPAC social media team and presents/pitches HAA stories to the Harvard Gazette on behalf of the HAA at weekly pitch meetings. Oversees writers producing content for HAA/HPAC Gazette storytelling and project manages writing projects across the HAA in collaboration with the AA&D Content Strategy team, ensuring timely delivery and success across teams. Develops deep content knowledge on a range of University-wide programs and priorities, serving as a resource for the HAA’s overall content strategy and monthly newsletters. Builds and leads collaborative partnerships with colleagues across AA&D and the University, including, but not limited to, the Harvard College Fund, HPAC, School social media managers, Athletics, the Harvard Gazette, and various institutes and centers across Harvard. Develops comprehensive content strategy to support priorities and initiatives across University partners with the goal of amplifying their messaging to a University-wide alumni community. Leads social media engagement strategy for the HAA Executive Director’s alumni facing social media presence, growing an engaged following of alumni. Directs HAA’s social listening strategy, keeping HPAC and HAA senior leadership apprised of social media response trends to major University news. Trains and mentors the Staff Assistant, Engagement Marketing and oversees this position’s work as it relates to social media project support. Monitors and evaluates analytics related to audience-specific marketing strategies, assesses trends and develops corresponding plans for optimal results. Develops analysis summaries by marketing campaign to inform team of effectiveness and opportunities for improvement. Directs AA&D’s social media alumni ambassador strategy and implementation including using data to determine top ambassadors, making metrics-driven decisions about which content to share widely, and managing alumni volunteering to participate in the program. Acts as primary HAA advisor to alumni volunteers across Clubs, Shared Interest Groups, Classes, and the HAA Board of Directors on social presence and ways to build their audiences using digital tools Presents social media strategy development and best practices at internal conferences and to HAA Executive Committee and HAA Board of Directors. Acts as lead on all HAA photography needs, managing vendors, photography strategy, and assesses HAA photo needs across all teams. In concert with HAA needs, works periodically on special projects in collaboration with the Director, Engagement Marketing and senior leadership. Must be able to think strategically and integrate strategy across a variety of social channels; Proven experience developing content strategy across a variety of channels and mediums, including written articles, multimedia, photography and social media in a complex organization Experience overseeing broad strategy for social platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Snapchat, and Instagram; Demonstrable success building engaged community across social networks; Must be flexible, quick to adapt, and possess the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks under deadline pressure; Direct experience working with senior leadership on developing and executing content strategy initiatives; Level of comfort operating in a frontline role for an institution like Harvard; Excellent writing and content creation skills; Ability to adapt voice and tone to audience; Strong communication, project management, and interpersonal skills a must; Experience on presenting about social media best practices a plus; Must be able to team-oriented with the ability to both operate effectively independently and as part of a tight-knit, highly productive team; Strong analytical and technical skills; Experience using metrics to adapt and shift strategy; Creative thinker, action-oriented, versatile, ability to adapt in dynamic environment and takes initiative; Experience creating engaging and original mobile video content preferred; Experience with Buffer and/or other social scheduling, monitoring, and listening tools; Adobe Creative Cloud and HTML experience a plus.
